Madagascar Fishing TRIPS in Paradise

Madagascar has long been regarded as one of the most exciting destinations for saltwater anglers worldwide. Located at the crossroads of warm Indian Ocean currents, the island offers exceptionally rich and diverse fishing grounds that remain largely untouched. This unique combination of geography and oceanic conditions is why Madagascar is often described as a true fishing paradise of the Indian Ocean.

The waters surrounding Madagascar are home to an impressive variety of pelagic and reef species. Marlin, tuna, sailfish and Giant Trevally thrive here in near-perfect natural conditions. The Nosy Be region is particularly renowned among anglers, where deep offshore waters meet reefs, islands and lagoons, creating some of the most productive fishing areas in the Indian Ocean.

What truly sets Madagascar apart from other exotic locations is the lack of mass tourism and fishing pressure. Vast stretches of open ocean, natural seasonal cycles and minimal human interference make fishing here a raw and authentic experience. Each day on the water is different, guided by nature rather than schedules — a rarity in today’s world.

Five days Madagascar fishing at sea in pursuit of big fish.

Our Nosy Be fishing trips last five days at sea, without returning to base. We reach places where others do not fish, which is why we have such results.

Find out what a typical day on such an expedition looks like. How do we live? What do we catch? How do we change our fishing techniques? And finally, what results do we have?

Typical Day on a Madagascar Fishing Trip

Madagascar – just the name evokes thoughts of exoticism, wild nature, and endless possibilities. However, for fishing enthusiasts like myself, who have been fishing there for eight years, it is primarily an eldorado full of emotions, adventures, and spectacular catches.

A day on the ocean starts early – by 7:00 AM, some fishermen are already up to take advantage of the unique opportunities for morning fishing.

Before breakfast, which is usually served around 8:00, many of us are not idle. The anchorage is where we most often start with popping or bottom fishing using a piece of fresh fillet. The morning catches are not only a great warm-up but also a chance for spectacular strikes from the fierce Giant Trevally (GT), which can evoke emotions right at the beginning of the day.

As the sun climbs higher in the sky, we adapt our fishing techniques. At this stage of the day, trolling usually proves to be the most effective method. We use a variety of lures, including artificial baits as well as fillets or live bait. Anything can happen here: sailfish, marlin, tuna, wahoo, or mahi-mahi may strike at any moment.

Fishing, however, is not about rigidly sticking to a plan—it is all about results. That’s why we often change everything and switch to slow jigging or fast jigging. With a change in technique comes a change in target species. Now we are dealing with groupers, trevallies, snappers, and quite often sharks.

As the day comes to an end and the sun sets, it’s time for another transition. We drop anchor and begin our night fishing using a local method known as palangote. It is an extremely effective technique, offering a whole spectrum of new species—a true lottery. More often than not, this is where we catch something for our dinner. You have never tasted fish this fresh.

We have been fishing this way for many, many years, and most of our clients have become friends. Many of them—ladies included—return to our Madagascar fishing expeditions almost every season.

Catch and eat – freshly caught fish straight to the plate

Most of our fish are caught according to the C&R (Catch & Release) principle, but we always keep something tasty from our catch for dinner.

What does a great fishing adventure mean without a good cook?

I have been fishing in the waters of Madagascar for eight years with the same crew, which includes Judie - our excellent chef. He takes care of our guests' well-being and meals like no one else.

Fishing in Madagascar is not just a sport, but also a unique culinary experience. The local waters offer not only a wealth of species but also excellent flavors. What is worth trying

- Red Snapper: Fried with chili - one of the biggest local delicacies.

- Sashimi and tartare: Made from the freshest catches, served immediately after being caught.

- Dried wahoo: Perfect for breakfast with rice porridge.

Each meal features fresh, local ingredients that will surprise even the most demanding gourmets.
